Story
I'm Dave from Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria where I've lived all of my life. I am 52 years old, married to Michelle for 29 years, I have one lovely 26 year old daughter Emily Grace, who were so proud of all her achievements in life so far. We also have Elizabeth Rose who is sadly no longer with us in person, but always in our hearts ❤.
I have been a keen, some say too keen a runner since 2007 when I joined Cumbria Constabulary. I was a member of a local gym at the time but after spending 8 hours a day at training school, the last thing I wanted was to be cooked up in the gym for an hour or so. It was then I decided to take up running, if not to de-stress and unwind, but to keep my fitness level up and my mind set good.
I've been raising money for various charities through my love of running over the years. For the past 10 years I've been running the K2B (Keswick to Barrow), a 40 mile road run raising money. My best achievement on this run was in 2014 where I ran with back then, my running mate Grant Johnson. We finished with 43 seconds between us, Grant was 1st and me 2nd, my time was 4hrs 54mins & 7secs. We both had The Brathay Windermere marathon the following week and vowed to rest our legs and go for our GFA times to get in London in 2015..... we didn't rest....we didn't get our GFA times either. I missed mine by about 42 seconds finishing Brathay in 3hrs 15min 41secs or there abouts.....
I've ran 3 Manchester marathon events, again raising money for local cancer charities, St Mary's Hospice. 2 London marathons 3 Hoad Hill Marathons which sadly no longer take place, my best achievements on this was 2nd male in 2015 & 3rd male in 2017. I've ran Lancaster Marathon but my biggest buzz was running New York Marathon in 2017, that was something else, hated the run from mile 8 onwards, but what an atmosphere.
Anyway I have always negated running Brathay Windermere 10 in 10 as it ordinarily clashes with the K2B, thus years K2B is in September when it should be in May but due to covid, it was postponed. For this reason I was able to run Brathay Windermere 2021, I finished over the line in 2hr 57 mins and Scott mentioned to me about the 10 in 10. For me, I felt he seen potential in my ability and the carrot was dangled, I took the bait and applied for a position.
I am so grateful to Scott and the Brathay team for allowing me to take part In this event. I am ready for it and look forward to meeting all the other athletes in time to come.
