We support people in Scotland to rebuild their lives

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On Friday 10th August with a little bit of support from Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland I will be taking on an outdoor cycling challenge at the Garioch Sports Centre in Inverurie taking a 10K route around the area and if it is a nice day - will do some more! It is my pleasure to be able to support Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland as a cause very close to my heart.

For those who may not know in 1997 I survived a life changing stroke which changed my life forever at the aged of 42. At the time I was an Offshore Maintenance Supervisor with the Chevron. After my stroke, I was supported the charity through their communication services for a number of years and after which since then I have been a volunteer with the charity sharing my experience with others to help and inspire them and helps me give something back to others who are in similar situations.

I know so well how life changing surviving a stroke is and how important the vital services and support Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland provide across Scotland and the local Aberdeen area in which I live. It has been my pleasure to work with the amazing service delivery team over the years including rehabilitation coordinator Gillian. Still to this day the effects of my stroke live with me, with ongoing communication difficulties and mobility issues but I don't let this stop me! I have taken part in many activites and will continue to do so such as local walkathon events and have even abseiled the Forth Rail Bridge - I have even had some thoughts about ziplining! As well as this, I am an active member of the Step Ahead Exercise Group which meets at Aberdeen Sports Village and is affiliated to Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland and my challenge will also be in support of them too.

I am delighted to be able to take part in this cycle for the charity and have been training hard, and will be on a tandem trike with a little bit of help for my steering and braking but all the hard work in pedalling I will complete!

If you are able to sponsor or support my efforts I would be so grateful as I know the charity will as they continue their new vision of No Life Half Lived.

You can see more about their vital work by visiting - www.chss.org.uk.

Everyday in Scotland:

  • 25 people will have a stroke
  • 30 people will have a heart attack
  • 46 people will be diagnosed with heart failure
  • 1 in 11 people will struggle to breathe because of chronic chest illness
