Our Story

In February of this year our father was suddenly and unexpectedly diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma. This was a huge shock to all of the family. Our father is and has always been a strong, fit and healthy person. Just one month before being diagnosed he was training for the Cork marathon! Under strict doctor's orders he is currently unable to train and it is for this reason that our group of friends has decided to run a marathon/half-marathon in his stead. Dingle marathon is one of the most scenic (read: hilly!) routes in Ireland - or dare I say, the world?! And it seems a fitting route to run to honour my dad's goal this year. The marathon takes place on 2 September 2017.

The Blog

Our dad has started a blog to document his thoughts. You can read it here (https://how2livewithcancer.blogspot.ie/). It is an entertaining and reflective diary of his musings. In his own words:

"This is a self help blog, not a manual.
I have terminal cancer, metastatic melanoma.
I need to find out how best to help myself.
So I write."

The Cause

During this difficult time, our father has received exemplary care from Marymount University Hospital and Hospice. Marymount offers respite, intermediate palliative and residential care services for the older person, specialist palliative care services, at both inpatient and community level and education courses and facilities.

Marymount needs to generate 30% of its income through fundraising which means that every cent or euro you donate will make a huge difference. All donations to Marymount benefit the patients, through the funding of frontline services, the funding of essential maintenance programmes and spending on capital projects.
