Some of you will know that Lily has a rare disease, Mast Cell Activation Disorder. 

Essentially this means that her body attacks innocent things as it mistakes them for threats. This makes her very unwell as a result. Lily can react to so many things - including food (she only has 9 safe foods), perfumes, cleaning products, stress, heat, friction, vibration and more!

Mast cells are a type of red blood cell. They play a major part in our immune systems - being the body's initial defence system. They react to foreign bodies and intruders by releasing many different chemical mediators. In a healthy person these chemicals help to protect the body, but in a person with MCAS these chemicals are triggered inappropriately and cause a variety of often severe and debilitating symptoms. Mast Cell disease sufferers often have a poor quality of life due to the impact of avoiding triggers and because of the chronic symptoms they suffer.

We are walking to raise money for Mast Cell Action, a new charity created to support families affected by the disease, raise awareness and help advance the diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

One of the biggest problems families face is getting a diagnosis as they usually have complex multi system symptoms and a lengthy medical history.
