As some of you may know, my Dad was diagnosed with vascular dementia over 2 years ago. Since that time his health has deteriorated very quickly, so much so that he is now totally dependent on my Mum caring for him at home 24/7.
At first caring for Dad at home wasn't too difficult as he was still able to perform everyday tasks like washing, dressing and feeding himself, however these days he needs help with all of these tasks. Read more of my story at www.thedistinctdot.com.
For those of you who have had no experience of alzheimers or dementia, it is a very cruel illness which can affect anyone from any walk of life and any academic skill...just like my Dad. What makes it so awful is that it turns into a different person with a new personality and little or no memory of familiar places or people, including close family members.
I've seen first hand how dementia takes away a person's life, so I felt it was time for me to try and raise awareness for dementia and alzheimers. Alzheimers Scotland do a lot of fantastic work to help and support both sufferers and their carers by offering practical support, a freephone support line, runs support groups and speaks out for the rights of sufferers and carers alike.
This awful illness could affect one of your loved ones, it could affect you, so please, if you are able to, please help me reach my target by donating to my chosen charity, Alzheimer Scotland.
