The project we are working towards is St Mary’s Hospital - Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) for NICU
“Retinopathy can affect up to 60% of babies born prematurely and occurs when babies suffer abnormal development of the blood supply to their undeveloped retinas and can render the baby blind. Once the disease has been identified, treatment must be given in 48 hours. However the decision to treat is not straightforward and requires judgement of an experienced ophthalmologist; as a result many babies will be transferred from external units to St Mary’s Hospital for expert opinion. However transporting premature babies across Manchester is a logistical challenge, as many of these babies are in unstable conditions. Rather than transporting these babies to St Mary’s Hospital, we aim to fund a specially adapted vehicle allowing us to transport our specialist screening equipment and ophthalmologists to those external units, saving time and risk to transporting sick and unstable babies.”
