In November 2009 my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was 9 at the time. It was the first time I saw my father cry.
A typical child knowing their mum has cancer obviously thinks the worst but in our case we were lucky, nearly 8 years on and i still have my mum, she is here and she is beautiful, she never stopped being beautiful even as her hair fell out and she was stuck in a hospital bed.
Many people in our family have not been so lucky and we have lost many a loved one to the disease.
We are shaving our heads to celebrate the past few years we've had of recovery and to remind anyone and everyone going though it or similar that hair doesn't justify beauty, girls can have short hair and that you are strong, loved and supported.
Me, my brother and my dad are all shaving our heads to remind ourselves to forever be thankful for Julie, a wife, a mother, a best friend and friend to everyone.
She is beautiful and she is alive and she is so very brave, all I wish for is that as I grow older I will be as graceful and as strong (hopefully without the trauma) as her.
She is the greatest mum anyone could ask for and I will ALWAYS be thankful to the nurses and doctors that continue to save lives and support patients and their families.
Keep fighting.
