We are here for victims and survivors to end sexual violence and abuse

Story

In England and Wales alone, 85,000 women per year – equivalent to 233 per day – are raped and well over 400,000 are sexually assaulted. One in five women in England and Wales has experienced some form of sexual violence since the age of 16. ONE IN FIVE.

I'm raising money at some events this year for survivors of rape and sexual assault. It is something I've felt very strongly about for a very long time. I will be racing (or more like a hasty shuffle) at:

- Leeds Half Marathon [DONE]
- Southport Triathlon [DONE]
- Leeds ITU World Triathlon [DONE]
- Ripon Standard Distance Triathlon [DONE]
- Ullswater Standard Distance Triathlon [DONE]
- Salford Standard Distance Triathlon [DONE]
- Allerthorpe Standard Distance Triathlon [DONE]
- 2.5km swimathon [DONE]
- English Half Marathon [DONE]
- The Yorkshire marathon, which will be my first ever marathon, in October 2018.
- The London Marathon 2019

Rape is life destroying, humiliating and violating and survivors have to live with their trauma. Survivors of rape are at an extremely high risk of PTSD, severe anxiety and depression resulting in suicide. Rape Crisis England and Wales support women and girls psychologically and medically who have experienced any form of sexual violence, and help to the services that they receive and work towards the elimination of sexual violence as a whole in the UK and abroad.

Why women and girls?
Rape Crisis England provide women-only spaces, so women can feel safe within the centres when they're at their most vulnerable and can be provided with specialist care.

However Rape Crisis believe all survivors of sexual violence deserve specialist support, and work in partnership with organisations that represent men and boys to lobby Government for adequate, sustained funding for specialist services for all survivors. Over half of Rape Crisis Centres provide specific support services for men and boys who have experienced sexual violence as a child and/or as an adult. Rape Crisis Centres that do not provide specialist services for men or boys will provide information about relevant local support organisations and signpost to appropriate men's services.
