Recently, something terrible happened to someone I love. If you're not familiar with me, I posted the story on my twitter (@calebdmtg). I posted it to help de-stigmatizing talking about sexual assault, but I wanted to do more to prevent similar acts of violence from happening, so I looked for a highly rated charity with proven, effective programs.
Futures Without Violence is a great charity, with eight consecutive 4-star reviews on Charity Navigator (https://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=6436). For reference, only some 13% of charities get three consecutive 4-star ratings, making Futures one of the top-performing charities in America. They value a long-term, evidence based approach to protecting kids, stopping domestic violence, and preventing sexual assault.
My favorite program of theirs is Coaching Boys to Men, a curriculum for coaches to help their players foster healthy attitudes and relationships. The program went through a three year analysis overseen by the center for disease control and was found to be highly effective in both decreasing a participants chance of harassing or assaulting women while increasing their chance of intervening if they witness something.
Players respect their coaches, and I have to imagine this program has a ripple effect that lasts into college and beyond. Here's a link if you want to read more on CBIM: http://www.coachescorner.org/impact/
In the policy and advocacy sphere they have some big wins, including work on the violence against women act.
