I am not a runner. I have run one 5k race, and once accidentally ran 10k after getting lost! I have often stated I never wanted to run more than 10k.
28 Too Many is a charity working to stop the practise of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), which still occurs in 28 countries in Africa as well as other communities around the world - including the UK! After hearing Anne-Marie Wilson talk about her work to help the girls who have undergone FGM, and her efforts to change the culture, educate community leaders and stop FGM, I was inspired to do something to help.
Following FGM, events in a woman's life which should be a joy become excruciating and unbearable. One Somalian woman described three sorrows in her life. Firstly, the day of infibulation (FGM), secondly, her wedding night, and thirdly giving birth to a child. How heart-breaking!
So here I am, training to run a half marathon of all things, in a bid to raise awareness of FGM and raise money in the fight to stop this barbaric practice, so girls of the future need not experience FGM.
