Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
Over 10,000 people are diagnosed with bladder cancer each year in the UK and the survival rate is around 56%. Other urogical cancers (prostate, kidney & testicular) are among the commonest cancers affecting families in the UK and generally are the least talked about and supported.
These cancers can affect both men and women, accounting for one in three of all cancers in men and one in five for women.
50,000 urological cancers are diagnosed every year in the UK & in any year, across the country they cause 18,000 deaths.
5,000 urological cancers are referred every year to hospitals in the North East of Scotland and in the whole of Scotland there is only one robotic surgery machine available for these patients.
Our efforts are aimed at supporting UCAN- a unique charity supporting patients & their families who have been touched by this cancer.
The UCAN centre is the only centre in the UK dedicated to supporting urinary cancer sufferers & their families.
Check out the fantastic work they do here: http://www.ucanaberdeen.com/
The fun bit is we organise a fireworks spectacular- the biggest and best available in the area, every year. The last event was held on Saturday 19th October and was great fun! The next event will be held October 2020- date to be finalised- watch this space..... at The Haughs Showground Turriff AB53 4EF.
Support activities are always on hand in the build up to the event, to include fire eating, fire juggling, stunt performers and live music with food and drink available throughout and more great music, both before & after and with a Son et Lumiere production during the fireworks ! Fairground rides kindly provided by Spencer's Fun fair will be open for business for the evening too.
In 2014, 2015 & 2016, at New Deer, over 3,000 people attended and our inauguration event held at Turriff in 2017 attracted over 4,000 visitors, so get there early.
In 2017,2018 and this year 2019 the event moved to the bigger showground in Turriff, and the evening was again hosted by Buchan Feelgood Radio with livecast via our Facebook page. @fireworksagainstcancer.
To date the 2019 event has raised over £2,500 and still counting!
Thank you to all who donated at the event and online here.
These fab people & organisations helped us put on the spectacular for 2019- our 2020 sponsors and helpers will be listed shortly!:
