We breed and train guide dogs to give blind people freedom and mobility

Story

On Friday night at 9pm Alexis Krachai and Nick Worrall will be setting out to hike 100km in 24 hours. We are taking part in the Peak District Challenge.

After completing the 75K route back in 2016 we've been planning the big one for a while. We've both been equally excited but also unnerved by the memory of what 75Km did to our feet.

As we made our final preparations in July, Nick's older brother Mike fell ill with Covid. After valiantly battling the virus for weeks he died with his family around him on 9 August. He was only 47.

Amidst such agony and Nick enduring all that comes with saying goodbye to a loved one, we've questioned whether to head out into the wilds or to call it a day. After discussion we have resolved to carry on with our challenge but in Mike's name.

Mike leaves behind a loving and devastated family. He also leaves a legacy of caring for and raising Guide Dog puppies who have gone on to help so many who are partially or full blind.

So with equal measures of resolve and heartache we're setting out on Friday to complete a challenge and to raise money for the Guide Dogs.

We'll be walking 100KM, climbing 3000 ft and inevitably talking about and reflecting on the impact this pandemic has had on Mike's family and us all.

We hope you will give generously for a wonderful cause.

The ability to get around is vital in order to live a full life yet thousands of people with sight loss never leave home alone. We empower visually impaired people to do that and rely on the support of the public to fund the guide dog service.
