So I decided I needed a challenge for 2014. Ive always said I will run a marathon one day, but after the Chester half marathon 5 years ago and the pain at the 10 mile mark I had pushed it firmly towards the bottom of the list as far as life goals go!
Then Dane Stanley got in my ear (admittedly after he was the wrong side of a few glasses of wine!) and made me aware of this event in April. He basically called me out, and Im not a big fan of backing down!
So as I sat eating my way through mountains of food and washing it down with a beer over the Christmas period watching my waistline grow I decided to do it, how hard can it be? Its just one foot in front of the other...(for 26 and a bit miles!)...and I have done a bit of running before...(never more than a half marathon!)...and I am reasonably fit...(or I was before gave up mid way through December and replaced the gym with eating!)
I now have 12 weeks to get myself in marathon shape. And with two young children ensuring I wont get too many full nights sleep in that time it isnt going to be easy. My primary objective is survival! I wont be setting any time goals just yet, although as I get closer to the time that might change.
I am running in aid of Action for Alports. A campaign launched in 2011 working with Kidney Research UK to hopefully find a cure for Alports syndrome. Alports Syndrome is a genetic disorder affecting the kidneys which is unfortunately affecting the son of one of my closest friends. There is no known cure but hopefully with more money they can continue to research and find one.
