Story

My name’s Megan, I’m 17, in the sixth form, and I want to make a difference. You can help me by following my blog, and you can also contribute to my Just Giving page, in support of Malaria No More.

It’s hard to believe that such a dangerous disease can be contracted from a single tiny mosquito bite. But while I was living in Malawi, my younger brother, Joe, caught the disease. Luckily, he was fit, strong, and had access to a private hospital, where he was given life-saving treatment and fully recovered after a week. However, he’d had the highest level of malaria parasites in his blood by the time he was tested and admitted to hospital. If he hadn’t been treated so quickly, he could have died, like 1500 children do every day.

Now I’m back home, in England, and I’m hoping to study medicine. I’m especially interested in Tropical Medicine, and have been lucky enough to spend time in a diabetes clinic in Malawi, a week in a coronary care unit at Southampton Hospital, a week in various departments at Stafford Hospital, and a week at Portsmouth Hospital, shadowing a consultant nephrologist, all of which I found really fascinating and worthwhile.

I share my journey from Malawi to medical school through my blog, as well as researching and discussing current medical issues. I also interview doctors and health care professionals from around the world, to gain a better understanding of  the medical profession.
