We raise life-changing funds to enhance care at UHS

Story

The nursing and medical teams are going to have a sponsored wal/run/cycle/swim/kayak/paddleboard of the distance around the area we cover as a Gatro and Hepatology unit. The total miles to be covered is 420.9 miles and this will be done across the month of June. The nurses and doctors will post updates as we go.

The Gastrointestinal (GI) and Hepatology Unit comprise of wards D8 and D9. Within D8 and D9 is the Gastrointestinal Bleeding and Liver Unit (GIBLU) which is our enhanced care area. There is a 4 bedded male GIBLU on D8 and a 6 bedded female GIBLU on D9. The most common reason for patients requiring this level of observation is due to gastrointestinal bleeding. This requires constant monitoring as well as active treatment to prevent further deterioration. Other reasons for the need of these bays include decompensated
liver issues and severe IBD.

The driver for this concept derives from national guidelines relating to the care of GI bleeds and Liver patients which recommend the care of these conditions is provided in specialist areas and that this improves patient safety and outcomes.

We will strive courageously to always put patients first and the key purpose of our specialist unit is to provide the best possible care and compassion for all who come through these doors. This involves having the right patient, in the right place, at the right time, having the right treatment and by the right team to get the best outcome.

We will work together ensuring that all patients with GI and liver disease that are cared for in this specialist area benefit from our
multidisciplinary team working and communicating.

We are committed to continually driving up standards and competence through fresh thinking to ensure that, from the point of admission, the individual’s journey mirrors what we would expect for our own family and friends.

The funds raised will be used to improve the environment for the patients.
