Our little April Fool Ronnie became seriously ill at 3 weeks old. Suffering from severe SVT caused by Wolf Parkinson White Syndrome. He arrived at Lewisham A&E with a heart rate over 280bpm, struggling to breathe and in significant distress. What followed was one of the most harrowing experiences of our lives. Our tiny little man battled through hours of emergency treatment as the team at Lewisham A&E and consultant cardiologists from the Evelina London fought to reduce his heart rate before his organs began to shut down under the duress. Once stable enough to be moved, the South Thames Retrieval service to moved him to intensive care where he remained with round the clock care for the days that followed.

Our story is thankfully one with a very happy ending. But without the swift help, world class knowledge, amazing facilities, compassion and unwavering care of the staff at the Evelina he simply would not have made it. After a year of treatment Ronnie is now understood to have made a full recovery and is the fun-loving, chaotic, bundle of toddler joy we always dreamed of. Taking part in the London Marathon is my way of saying thank you to the team who looked after Ronnie. Everyone involved in his treatment was an inspiration and the level of care was phenomenal. The nurses, support staff and consultants were all so understanding, empathetic and compassionate. I couldn’t thank them enough. We owe Ronnie’s life to them.
