The Marathon des Sables is an iconic event still dubbed the "toughest footrace in the world", though this is no longer the case.

165 miles through the Saraha desert in southern Morocco

only water (rationed) and open sided 8 person bivouacs provided, the rest must be carried by runners

I have been training for 18 months, running on average 8 hours a week, and have lost 10kg in the process, though am not quite a "racing snake" yet! I have completed several ultra marathon races since last September - equivalent to 11 marathon distances. My overrriding memory so far from training over the winter is of MUD, WET and COLD, but soon to be replaced by HEAT and SAND!!
