I have just lost a very good friend of mine, Tony Wicks, to Motor Neurone Disease (MND). It is a fatal, rapidly progressing disease that affects the brain and spinal cord. It leaves people locked in a failing body, unable to move, talk, swallow and eventually breathe. It is a heart-breaking, agonising, and horrendous experience for any patient and their loved ones.

Tony was diagnosed with MND last summer. Before that, he worked for NHS Blood & Transplant for 19 years. His biggest loves were his family, job, music (especially the Beatles and the Saw Doctors), cricket, table tennis, and travelling. He was very well-loved by all who knew him for his kind heart, dedication and witty, dry sense of humour. Throughout his fight against MND, Tony always stayed strong-spirited and incredibly inspirational to everyone around him.

Up to 5000 people are now fighting MND at various stages. Each and every day 6 people are diagnosed with this disease, and 6 more die from it. It kills a third of people within a year and more than half within 2 years of diagnosis. Sadly, there is NO EFFECTIVE TREATMENT and NO CURE at the moment. The helplessness and lack of hope make MND so extremely cruel.

I will have my 33+ inches long hair cut in hope of raising some funds for the MND Association to contribute to their research for a cure, while my actual hair will be donated to Little Princess Trust to make wigs for young cancer patients.
