Story

  • Write a poem on the themes 'learning' 'senses' and 'warmth' (as loosely as you like)
  • Video record yourself reading the poem (or the visual can be anything you like - birds flying etc..) on a phone
  • Send the poem file to me via WeTransfer.com or email (harriet-em@hotmail.co.uk) and make your donation on this page
  • Poems will be judged in July by a famous poet (TBA) and the winner will not only receive glory, but also a first class prize!

THE PROJECT:
There are 5 secondary schools for deaf children in Kenya and none in the region Riandu, which means that only 12% of deaf teenagers in Kenya are receiving secondary education.

My buddy Ali's dad is a trustee of the Peter Cowley African Trust that work with projects in Kenya and her brother Pete is a training architect. The Church and Mother's Union in Riandu, Kenya have expressed need for a secondary school that caters for deaf teenagers and Pete, with help of his architect profressor at Nottingham University (and a little team of architects including Roan Howard-Jones!) are designing this school right now. We will commence building stage 1 (of 3) this summer end of August-September. And all the build volunteers like myself need to raise £1000 for building materials (of £80,000 alltogether).

THE POETRY SLAM:
It's a huge and exciting project. I wanted to channel that excitement into my fundraising efforts and make the whole process a creative joy-spreading venture of some sort. Many of you will know that I like to collect poems from friends when they come to my house to stick on my 'poetree' (its a wall-mounted tree of poems). Poems are somehow a lovely little snippet of someone's mind at a point in time, or a bit of a fun nonetheless. So....to raise funds, I wanted my friends, their friends, their neighbours, my teachers, some people your aunty met in the street last week and their long-distance cousins.. to send me poems for a poetry slam (/poetry reading).

This is going to be a big event so it will have to be video readings sent to be via WeTransfer.com or email (my email is harriet-em@hotmail.co.uk). You may video yourself performing, or anything you want, as long as the poem is read over the top, or is expressed in some way. You just donate £5 (or more if you like) to this justgiving page per entry to the contest.

The best 20 entries will be sent to a famous poet judge (TBA) and the top 3 will be announced, and with permission, published online. The winner will receive a writing quill and a pot of ink (creative juices) so that they give the world more of their talent!

But don't worry - it doesn't have to be a 'technically' great poem, I  have heard that even my cat is entering... so I guess as long as you can do better than headbutting a camera and drooling you're set for greatness.
