Charlie Craig was a young cyclist destined for a great future in the cycling world; I know because I saw him race, I saw him win and, standing beside his dad, cycling legend Nick, I saw the pride on Nick's face.
As father and son they stood together in 2017, as Charlie and Nick both led their respective classifications in the National Series - a unique feat for this amazing family and British Cycling.
However, tragedy was to strike a few weeks later, as Charlie went to sleep one night and simply never awoke. His young heart stopped and the world lost a truly amazing and wonderfully talented and unique young man. How Nick, Sarah and Tom cope I do not know, as shed tears even now as I type this. Heart and cardiac issues in young people are far more common than we realise ...until tragedy strikes. We do not routinely screen young people in this country.
On 14th April 2018, along with my two friends, Yury Beltran and Franceli Corrales, and in memory of Charlie, and to raise the profile of Cardiac Risks in the Young, I'll be riding my bike from Mont st Michel with Yury and Franceli to the very geographic Heart of France, then back to Mont st Michel in a heart shaped route - now that will be a challenge worthy of Charlie Van der Craig.
We'd love you to support this worthy cause in memory of Charlie, which is also so poignant, following the tragedy in Paris Roubaix just this weekend.
Please also take time to visit the #rideforcharlie website and read about this wonderfully talented boy.
Hopefully,at the end of the ride, as well as having a great story to tell and write about in a book, I will have raised awareness of #Ride4Charlie, the fund started in his name, and of the risks to young people from cardiac episodes. If we can do this, and bring screening checks for young people one step closer, each and every painful km will have been worth it.
