In the past two years both of my sons were diagnosed with a extremely rare form of anaemia called Diamond Blackfan Anaemia (DBA). Diamond Blackfan Anaemia (DBA) is a rare bone marrow failure disorder, usually diagnosed before 12 months of age. DBA patients fail to produce red blood cells properly and may need treatment ranging from monthly blood transfusions to regular steroid treatment, and in some cases bone marrow transplant.
It is usually an inherited condition but sometimes a new mutation occurs which is what happened with them and not picked up until adulthood. There are only around 120 people in the UK who suffer from it. However, in August our granddaughter Hilda was born and tests have proven that she has inherited the DBA gene too. We hope she is following in her Daddy and Uncle’s footsteps and she too has a mild form.
Further research is needed for this condition as well as support for those who are suffering from it. With this in mind, I am planning on walking 100K for DBA UK during 6 weeks from October 1st to raise some much needed funding.
I would value your support by donating to our just giving page. I will keep you updated as the kilometres are clocked up. Thank you.
