Story

When I said I was going to do a Firewalk, people asked me ‘why?’ – I just thought it was easier than jumping out of a plane - people do this for charity! Well, I did it!

A combination of materials are burnt and broken down into a smooth red hot path of embers. The lane itself is between 15-20ft long and 2-3ft wide and when it comes to doing the walk, the firelane burns at a core temperature of over 1000° degrees Fahrenheit -  human skin will start to burn at 130° degrees Fahrenheit.

I don’t at the moment have a photo which shows me on the firewalk, but I do have a photo of the firelane with flames – and I’ve a certificate to acknowledge that I walked completely barefoot over hot coals. See our website for the full story www.epsom.cats.org.uk - when you open the page, click on ‘News’.

Apparently, 20% of donations are given after the event – so don’t be shy – feel free to donate:

·        Online donations via Just Giving  www.justgiving.com/HelenFisherEpsomCP

·        Text donations to 70070 and quote CPCP50 or

·        Cheques payable to Cats Protection and sent to Treasurer, Cats Protection, 5 Preston Drive, Ewell. Surrey. KT19 0AD – and mark the envelope/note ‘Firewalk’.

Thanks to all those who’ve donated so far.

I’m the volunteer Co-ordinator of the Epsom, Ewell & District Branch of Cats Protection; this is a small branch of the national charity, run entirely by volunteers. Our main aim is to find a ‘forever home’ for the cats in need. These cats may be strays which have been lost or abandoned by their owners - including tiny kittens, cats whose owners have died or cats given up as the owners can no longer keep them (often because of moving into rented accommodation). Their stories are heartbreaking. All of the cats in CP care are vet-checked, neutered, vaccinated, microchipped  and given love and care. In 2013, we homed 335 cats; the cost of this included £5k on food, £2k on litter, £8k on neutering and £41k on vet bills (the love and care comes with no charge).  We have about 25 cats in care at any time and a similar number on the waiting list. We rely on fundraising, donations and legacies to keep going – so I really appreciate your interest and donations.  You can also donate by text to 70070 and quote CPCP50 £5

This is a sponsored walk but with a difference – walking barefoot over a bed of hot wooden coals. A combination of pine, ash and oak is burnt and broken down into a smooth red hot path of embers. The lane itself is between 15-20ft long and 2-3ft wide and when it comes to walk on the coals, the fire lane will be burning at a core temperature of over 800° degrees Fahrenheit.

The oldest recorded firewalk took place in India over 3,000 years ago and evidence of firewalking has been found on every continent except Antarctica. From the shamanic Hawaiian Kahunas walking over red hot lava to the healing ceremonies of the Kung Bushmen of the African Kalahari desert, the act of firewalking still forms a key religious and spiritual practice of indigenous people the world over.
