Fundraising for The Survivors Trust
Story
Later this year I’ll be running the Paris Marathon for The Survivors Trust, a UK based charity that helps support and empower survivors of rape and sexual assault. Please take a moment to read why I’ll be raising money for them and why they are such an important cause.
97,000 people are raped in England and Wales each year, 500,000 adults are sexually assaulted in England and Wales each year. 88% of rape victims are female.
But perhaps one of the most shocking statistics of all is that 1/3 of people which is 22 million in just the U.K. believe that women who flirt are partially responsible as a rape victim.
Women should feel comfortable to speak to who they want to, to wear what they want to and to go out when they want to without anyone else deciding that they have any right to their body. Men too are victims of rape and sexual assault, however the number of the victims that are women is significantly higher. The belief that men cannot be raped or sexually assaulted is completely false and of course rape and sexual assault can and does have just as significant an impact on the victim no matter their gender.
The Survivors Trust in their own words is “a U.K. national umbrella agency for 130 specialist organisations for support for the impact of rape, sexual violence and childhood sexual abuse throughout the U.K. and Ireland.” Their core aim is to “empower survivors of rape, sexual violence or childhood sexual abuse through supporting and improving effective responses to survivors.” They provide support to member agencies, deliver campaigns to raise awareness of rape and sexual abuse and it’s effect on survivors, as well as promoting effective responses on a local, regional, and national scale. They are a great charity and a great help to those that need them. So please help me in supporting The Survivors Trust when I run the Paris Marathon in April, thank you in advance.
