Please......help me make a difference!
I currently work as Director of Unscheduled Care at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Trust. In deepest, darkest, winter last year, I decided I was going to do something to raise money for a piece of kit for the truly inspiring Unscheduled Care team at GHT. 10 months down the line and the day is finally here - on Sunday 4th November I will be running the New York Marathon to raise money for a Spectrophotometer for the Acute Medical Unit.
Why? Subarachnoid haemorrhages are caused by bleeding on the surface of the brain. It's a very serious condition and can be fatal. The diagnosis cannot always be made by imaging of the brain. When this is the case we need to look at the cerebrospinal fluid around the brain and spinal cord. The equipment for this is a called Spectrophotometer.
At the moment we have to send samples to Bristol for testing and patients usually have to wait over night for the result. 90% of these tests are negative which means that if we can do the tests locally most of the patients will be able to go home the same day - better for them and freeing up beds for the hospital.
We urgently need this equipment to improve the speed at which we can diagnose this serious condition. By reducing our time to diagnosis we can get our patients to the much needed tertiary centre for the right specialist care faster, improve patient experience and reduce anxiety for patients and their relatives.
Please give as much as you can and help me make a difference to winter 2018/19.
Thanks, Hilary x
