World record marathon 10s rugby match · 21 June 2019
In 2016, Cpl Rob Bugden, a Parachute Jumping Instructor (PJI) from Airborne Delivery Wing (ADW), RAF Brize Norton, was involved in a parachuting accident leaving him paralysed from the chest down. Due to Rob's passion for rugby, ADW wanted to do something to keep Rob involved in something he loved. The fallout was the creation of a rugby 7s team and due to the nature of the PJI role, the name 'Horus' was chosen as the most apt as he is the Egyptian God of the Air. Initially an ADW team, it has now grown into so much more and encompasses wider RAF Brize Norton personnel. Not only do Horus compete in several competitions throughout the season, they have become a close-knit team, boosting morale within ADW and bringing together the wider RAF Brize Norton families. The further positive effects of the Team is the amount of money that has been raised for both Service and civilian charities.
In July 2017, the Team undertook a Guinness World Record for the Longest Marathon Playing Rugby Union 7s. Horus achieved a staggering 24hrs and 30 mins and were awarded the Guinness World Record which still remains unchallenged. Now in their 4th season, Horus are attempting another Guinness World Record - the Longest Marathon Playing Rugby Union 10s in support of the RAF Benevolent Fund. This charity is very close to the hearts of ADW as the Benevolent Fund greatly supported Rob and other PJI colleagues through the changes in their lives.
The match will be played against Scotty's Little Soldiers, KO at 1700 on Friday 21 June at Witney RFC, playing for a minimum of 24 hrs. Please show your support for this gruelling attempt and the RAF Benevolent Fund.
