My Story ,

I have been on dialysis now for 3 1/2 years after complete kidney failure in March 2015. Due to clots and other related problems my fitnesss level has dropped dramatically. I want to and need to improve this so I joined a medical trial through Leicester General hospital which involves an adapted cycle machine which allows you to cycle whilst on your chair bed and hooked up to the dialysis machine . After an assessment in Leicester the group is split in two , those who exercise and those that don’t so a direct comparison can be made . Then targets are set for those randomly selected and the trial runs for 6 months . Starting steadily then increasing the time and resistance of the machine , the aim is to build up to a reasonable time on the bike . I aim to build myself back up to a decent level of fitness . The cycle machine obviously keeps a track of the distance travelled so is easy for me to add it up for total distance. I have always enjoyed watching the cycling so have tried to link my challenge with something appropriate. The tour of Britain this year is over a total distance of 1126km and I am hoping that the distance is an achievable one for me in the 6 months of the trial . I would like to give back to kidney care uk because they helped me when I needed it and constantly help patients in many different ways , I would like to put something back so they can continue to help others . I would like to thank the trial team at Leicester General , the charity Kidney Care UK and all the staff at my dialysis unit in Kettering , without them all this would not be possible. I will do regular updates with achievements and photos . Thanks for reading and your support .
