Story

I am going to loose 3 stone to raise money for the PDA society.
In 2013 I was diagnosed with aspergers syndrome with PDA (pathological demand avoidence). To us as a family there was no knowledge about PDA and lots of places hadn't heard of it and some places didn't even recognise it. To me my family and teachers learnt about PDA through me teaching them through the behaviour I would exibit. I feel that I want to raise awareness for PDA along side raising money for a good cause. It's really really hard for families when a child is diagnosed with PDA because many people have never heard of it in a way they have with aspergers. It's hard because most places don't know the extent of anxiety PDA can put on a child.

When I was diagnosed with aspergers and PDA I was given a medication that unfortunately as a side effect caused my appetite to increase. Since gaining the weight I haven't felt myself. I would love to do something positive for myself whilst raising money for the PDA society. My goal is to loose 3 stone and get sponsored for this and all donations will be sent directly to the PDA society.

This is not a uncommon disorder but it is undiagnosed in a lot of children. If you don't know what PDA is then to me it means anxiety when a demand is applied in a specific way. I have learnt to cope with my PDA but I still do not feel the research is given to help children and families understand there child's PDA.

Any donations are highly appreciated and it would mean a lot to me if you share. Thanks so much for reading.

PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance) is widely understood to be a profile on the autism spectrum, involving the avoidance of everyday demands and the use of ‘social’ strategies as part of this. PDA individuals share autistic characteristics and also have many of the ‘key features’ of a PDA profile. We provide information, support and training about PDA for individuals, families and professionals. We aim to increase acceptance and understanding of a PDA profile and to improve outcomes for individuals and families by focusing everyone involved on ‘what helps’. Each year we answer around 2,300 enquiries from people seeking support and deliver training to 2,400 parents, carers and professionals. Our information resources reach 500,000 people a year via our website and social media. All our services are run by the PDA community and include: • an enquiry line • an online forum • information resources • training • conference every other year We also share good practice, work in partnership with other organisations and promote research on PDA.
