We support people with Spinal Cord Injury to help them live full, independent lives

Story

Hello,

Welcome to my Just Giving page. I'm taking on the Aspire Channel Swim 2019, swimming the distance of the English Channel (22 miles) over 12 weeks to raise money for the Aspire Leisure Centre.

The challenge will be taking place at Aspire Leisure Centres' fully accessible indoor swimming pool over 12 weeks. I started my 12 week journey on Monday 9th September and I am due to finish my challenge by the end of November. I will be posting regular updates throughout the coming weeks with how I am progressing and what distances I have covered.

Facing this massive challenge is important to me because Aspire has enabled me to get fitter and meet other people with different disabilities who are getting on with their lives as best as they can in an independent manner.

Please donate generously to this cause and spread the word as wide as you can! All donations are welcomed and greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Irene

Every four hours someone is paralysed by Spinal Cord Injury and Aspire provides the essential equipment, advice and housing that spinal cord injured people need to live their lives independently. Approximately 2,500 people sustain a spinal cord injury in the UK every year.

Aspire is a national charity that provides practical help to people who have been paralysed by Spinal Cord Injury. A spinal cord injury can happen to anyone at any time, and no one is prepared for how it will change their life. Aspire exists because there is currently no cure. The Aspire Leisure Centre is based in North West London within the grounds of the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore.

The centre was the first fully accessible leisure centre in Europe for both disabled and non-disabled people and boasts a disabled membership of 32% of Aspire Leisure Centre members are disabled, compared to an average of just 2-3% at other sports centres nationally.

You can find out more information about the Aspire Leisure Centre through their website here: https://www.aspireleisurecentre.org.uk
