Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
After learning to ride a racehorse two years ago in order to support my Dad in his fight against cancer and raise £20,000 for Macmillan, I am now pursuing the dream of becoming a jockey and have the amazing opportunity to ride at my old stomping ground, Newbury Racecourse, where I worked as Sponsorship Manager for nearly three years - and all in aid of another brilliant cause.
The British Horse Society has 200 dedicated volunteers who work hard to prevent the neglect, cruelty and harm to horses as well as giving advice and education to riders. They are at the forefront of improving road safety for horse and rider - something very close to my heart after a friend ended up in a coma from her horse being spooked by a car blazing past her on a quiet country lane.
In the last 10 years 43 riders and 315 horses have been killed in car accidents. 94% of these because the car passed either too quickly or too closely. The BHS are running a campaign Dead or Dead Slow which will promote the following message as well as encourage riders to wear Hi-Viz clothing to help drivers:
1. Slow down to a maximum of 15mph
2. Be patient please don't sound a horn or rev an engine
3. Pass the horse wide and slow, (if safe to do so) at least a car's width if possible
4. Drive slowly away
