We stand for everyone affected by dementia to find a cure

Story

16 July 2021 Update:
Ironman Wales has been moved (AGAIN) from Sep 2021 to 2022.
I'm now racing in the DALESMAN Ironman in Ripon (Yorkshire Dales) on 22nd August 2021.

9 June 2020 Update:
Ironman Wales has been moved from Sep 2020 to Sep 2021.

Alzheimers has affected several members of my family over the last ten years, and I'm so grateful that Alzheimers Research UK are working tirelessly to find a cure for the disease.

To support and raise funds for ARUK, I'll be competing in the first Ironman triathlon of my life in September 2020.

An Ironman consists of:
🏊‍♂️ Swimming 3.8km
🚴‍♂️ Cycling 180km
🏃‍♂️ Running a marathon (42km)

If I'm lucky, the race will take me 12 hours from start to finish.

To prepare for the Ironman, I've competed in the following races and challenges:

🏃‍♂️ Cambridge Half Marathon (March 2020)
🏃‍♂️ London Marathon (April 2020 - postponed to Oct '21)
🏊‍♂️🚴‍♂️🏃‍♂️Slateman Half Ironman (June 2020 - cancelled)
🏃‍♂️ Virtual London Marathon (October 2020)
🚴‍♂️🚴‍♂️🚴‍♂️🚴‍♂️ Red Bull Time Laps 25hr Team Relay race (Oct 2020)
🏃 My first 50km Ultramarathon (December 2020)
🚴‍♂️🏔️ 53 ascents of Swains Lane - 3776m of elevation e.g. the height of Mount Fuji (May 2021)
🏊‍♂️🚴‍♂️🏃‍♂️Eton Sprint Triathlon (May 2021)
🏊‍♂️🚴‍♂️🏃‍♂️Hever Castle Half Ironman (July 2021)
🚴‍♂️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿London to Wales 226km solo ride (August 2021)

Not only will this be the longest and hardest race of my life, but I've chosen to compete in Ironman Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿the 9th-hardest Ironman in the world:

"Of all the races I’ve done, Wales is probably the hardest, but also my favourite. The choppy swim, the long, long run uphill to T1, the relentless hills on the bike and the marathon that’s, quite literally, entirely up or down, make for a physically tough day out. Add on the high probability of somewhat inclement weather and there isn’t much about it that’s easy! On average, Wales is probably an hour (at least) slower than other Ironman races. But I’d argue that it’s more rewarding. And once you finish Ironman Wales? Then you know you can finish anything!"
~ Lucy Gossage, 13 x Ironman champion 🏆

As well as spending 12 hours racing the Ironman, I'll spend between 200-300 hours in 2020 training for it.

In other words - it's not going to be easy!

Throughout 2020, I'll be raising money for the fantastic work being done by ARUK to find a cure for Alzheimers.
