Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

As some of you may know in March 2008 I was diagnosed with a molar pregnancy, which is basically instead of a baby grow cysts grow instead and if not treated fast can turn into cancer. After a operation and tests every other week for 6 months I got the all clear.

Charing Cross Hospital was so helpful and if a ever had a question I felt I could call them however stupid it was. I never had to go to Charing Cross as the Norfolk and Norwich did all the work but hardly any of the Doctors had heard of the condition. This is why they need all the help they can get as only

The Cancer Treatment and Research Trust (CTRT) was founded in 1985. Its main role is to raise funding for research into why and how cancers develop; better ways of detecting and monitoring cancers; finding and testing new treatments; providing additional support for our patients.

They do not know exactly what causes a molar pregnancy but we do know that the pregnancy fails at the time of fertilisation. It is also rare: for every 1000 live births registered in the UK, only 1 molar pregnancy is registered. There are two types of molar pregnancy. A complete mole is where the placenta grows as a series of cysts (like grapes) but there is no fetus. That is th type I had. A partial mole is similar but there is evidence that of some abnormal fetal development; the fetus cannot survive.

As there is a risk of molar tissue persisting in the uterus and growing and spreading, a series of tests are done following a molar pregnancy which shows whether molar tissue is still present. For most women monitoring is all that is necessary but in about 10% of the women the tests will show persistence of the molar tissue. This condition is curable but it needs to be treated and this is normally done at Charing Cross Hospital.

World-class research undertaken by consultants and their teams at Mount Vernon. Hospital in north London and Charing Cross Hospital in west London.

In addition to our GTT Appeal, we are in constant need of funds to keep our work going.

Our support comes from many sources including:

Patients their friends and relatives

Bequests and gifts in memory of patients who have suffered from cancer

Organised sponsored events

Doctors involved with the CTRT have donated a substantial proportion of their fees from private patients to the Trust
