Jim died peacefully following a cardiac arrest in his sleep from which he never regained consciousness. In his case the use of defibrillators gave extra time to the wonderful staff at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary to care for him and extra time to us, his family, to say goodbye. He would love to think that in some way his passing is remembered by the provision of defibs to schools (which we can choose locally) and meeting places and that this act may save some young lives. He loved his grandchildren dearly.
By the way, many of you have asked for a copy of the poem which Dad wrote on his last day in the office - strangely, but not for him, to the outgoing toilet, being replaced with a new one! Here it is:
Ode to the departing Loo
For many years I've sat there
Morning, noon and night
Waiting for a visitor
To switch on the flaming LIGHT
Now my time has ended
A new boy is in place
Soon he'll feel so "sat-upon"
Yet never see a face
My story's done - my time has come
I'm heading out the door
But to the men both sort and tall
Stop pissing on the FLOOR.
So now I say "Goodbye my Friends"
My lips are sealed for ever
I take our secrets to the grave
And hope you soon recover.
