In March 2019, my daughter Joanna died in the Ethiopian Airlines crash as she was on her way to the UN Environment Conference to engage the international community in addressing the problem of ghost gear and its environmental and animal welfare impacts.
Jo co-founded and was a key driving force behind the establishment of the Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI) during her tenure at World Animal Protection. Jo went on to lead the development and implementation of the UN-FAO Global Programme of Work on addressing abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear - one of the most significant threats to animals and the health of our oceans.
In recognition of Jo’s leading role in addressing ghost gear and in celebration of Jo’s legacy and dedication to her work, World Animal Protection is establishing the Joanna Toole Global Ghost Gear Solutions Award.
This award has been developed in close consultation with Jo's family and friends and members of the GGGI.
The Joanna Toole Global Ghost Gear Solutions Award will be formally awarded by World Animal Protection through the Joanna Toole Foundation together with the GGGI and will be administered through the GGGI Secretariat. World Animal Protection has committed to finance the award for the first three years.
The Joanna Toole Foundation is in the course of being set up and not itself able to appeal for funds yet but for the time being, World Animal Protection will dedicate your donations to this award.
In celebration of Jo's life and her passion for saving our oceans, please consider making a gift for the Joanna Toole Global Ghost Gear Solutions Award.
On World Oceans Day on 8th June 2019, the first Joanna Toole Global Ghost Gear Solutions Award will be launched and later awarded to a project designed to tackle the problem of ghost gear. The projects will make our ocean a safer home for it's creatures - something that Jo dedicated her life to achieving.
