This is a charity close to my heart. Over the past 5 years, two dear family friends, have died of brain tumours, aged 44 and 61, both leaving behind young families. My own family has also been tragically hit with this unforgiving illness in that 2 of my family members are now battling brain cancer with dignity and courage in the face of adversity given the poor prognosis that comes with this type of cancer. It's fair to say that "brain tumours" have changed forever the life of our family as we live daily with the uncertainty of life.
When faced with tragedy, however, it's important nonetheless to try and make a difference. Our own personal difficulty has strengthened our family and "life" now means everything to us. Last year on,"Bandana Day" we raised over £2k, in just a day, as it seemed right to do something to raise awareness and much needed charitable funds, than do nothing at all. We followed that success with a charitable car boot event where folk generously gave and shared stories too of their loved ones facing similar tragedies. The highlight of the year was our charitable rounder's event at Newcastle Falcons, where over 200 folk came to partake in an enjoyable evening of friendly rounder's and funds of c£2,000 were raised on the night with sales of raffle tickets; prizes generously donated by local businesses and individuals.
Following the success of that event, "Rounder's round two" was held on the eve of the 21st September 2016 and lets just say it gets better and better, raising funds of £2,550. Special thanks, again, to Newcastle Falcons for so generously giving us their full support. Without it the event simply wouldn't happen.
Our thanks to all those who have assisted us on our journey and in our efforts to raise funds for our chosen charity.
Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40. Over 4800 people lose their lives to a brain tumour every year. It is an unforgiving illness, detected often without warning resulting in devastating consequences. Early diagnosis can save lives and despite the governments commitment to early diagnosis of cancer, it has provided no funds or resources to raise awareness of the symptoms of brain tumours. This needs to change.
