I am having a midlife episode and felt compelled to take up some form of sport - I chose wild swimming.  I thought I could combine this new passion and raise money for an excellent charity, one that often gets over looked. 

Rape Crisis Centres provide frontline specialist, independent and confidential services for survivors/victims who've experienced any form of sexual violence, at any time in their lives. Last year, Centres provided over 650,000 sessions of counselling, advocacy and support, responded to over 179,000 helpline calls and their specialist services were accessed by 78,461 individuals.

I think people assume that anyone who has been impacted by rape/sexual violence, would have access to free specialist support at the point of need. This is not the case and in March 2018 there were 6,355 survivors on Rape Crisis waiting lists. Demand is increasing and this year some Centres have been forced to close their waiting lists, due to lack of funding. 

I have worked for Rape Crisis for over a decade and know first hand, the life changing impact of the specialist support services offered, to those whose lives have been devastated by sexual violence.
