Story
On the 20th of November I'll be running 26.2 miles (marathon) pushing myself to go as fast as I can; participating in Greenpeace UK 's virtual 25 mile Challenge. Which you will be able to view (and judge!) through Strava on the day, on the JustGiving page.
I feel a bit conceited announcing this, as if I'm doing some fantastic thing, I'm not, I'm just going on a run.
I realise almost everyone connected is, like me, a pretty broke student and can't afford to throw money at some man for doing a run, so please don't feel obligated to give ANYTHING. I'm not doing this to raise loads of money (or with the expectation of doing so), but it's a free event and I thought if I can raise even a tiny amount for a cause I feel very passionately about then it's worthwhile.
I've never done a marathon, and the last time I ran over 5k was almost four years ago when I did a half-marathon. So, that being said, this will not be easy for me, which I think in some respects makes this fundraiser a bit more justified in asking for financial support (who wants to donate to someone to do something they will just enjoy or can easily do?).
The climate crisis, for me is the most pressing issue humanity and the world has ever faced, at the moment it is disproportionately and most severely affecting those in the Global South, and in time will lead to even greater catastrophes internationally - ones that are borderless. This won't just affect soldiers; civilians, it will affect those yet to be born, the climate crisis will drown, suffocate, and burn cities and nations, it will wipe out entire species (even more so than it already has); it will worsen the quality of life for every single one of us in a variety of different ways.
I believe Greenpeace is and has been, the most effective non-violent independent environmental campaign organisation around. They have pressured polluting companies; held banks and supermarkets accountable; pressed governments on their climate agenda; informed the general population about the importance of climate protection, and what they can do about it.
That's why I'm running for GreenPeace.
Exciting!
