JOGLE 4 BRAD'S - VW ENTHUSIASTS ON 50cc MOPEDS!!!

Following an online discussion about long journeys on mopeds, a thread was started on Volkszone.com (VW) forums asking if anyone would be interested in a charity run from John O’Groats to Lands End - on 50cc motorbikes!

Thread: http://www.volkszone.com/VZi/showthread.php?t=714873

As foolhardy an idea as it might appear, soon enough people started putting their names down and it has snowballed from there.

The premise is simple, meet at John O’Groats in Scotland on the 6th April 2012 where we will rally together that evening at the John O' Groats Campsite ready for the off on the (early) morning of Saturday 7th April 2012.

Over the following week, we aim to cover around 1,000 miles to Lands End in Cornwall while raising money for the Brads Cancer Foundation along the way.

The rules for taking part are basic enough, get a 50cc bike, get it road legal, buy a crash helmet, raise some sponsorship money (everybody needs to raise a minimum of £50 to bring to the start point) and get yourself to the start point with your camping gear. We are currently trying to organise transport for bikes up to John O' Groats - so please keep checking back for updates.

Participants will need money for fuel, food and campsite fees. Although we hope to get at least some this sponsored, for now, please assume that you will need to cover your own costs.

Participants so far are very varied from complete novices through to people who hold full motorbike licenses. Some people have known each other for years, others have never met. This will be a great opportunity to meet people who share a passion for Volkswagens, mopeds/scooters or both. As well as the task of covering the miles and raising money for the charity, there will be lots of social aspects to the event and we expect the campovers at a different venue each night to become legendary - with many making new friends etc. This really will be a 'once in a lifetime' experience.

For those not interested in taking part in the whole journey you can of course come and meet us at the various stages and show support en route or simply come and socialise with us in the evenings.

The steeds range from modern bikes through to classics and customs. The only limitations are that the bikes must be 50cc and must be road legal (i.e. M.O.T, insurance and appropriate license/qualification to ride).

It is worth bearing in mind that anyone who has held a full car license before 01.02.2001 can ride a 50cc bike with no L-plates. Those who passed after this date have to take a C.B.T. (Compulsory Basic Training course). Those who do not hold a full license must obtain a provisional license and take a C.B.T. If you do have pre 2001 entitlement and have never ridden a motorbike before we would encourage you to take a C.B.T just to acquaint yourself with your bike and how to ride it safely.

Obviously it’s unlikely that many people will want to ride their moped/scooter from where they live to John O’Groats and back from Lands End after the event and so a convoy of support vehicles is also being arranged. A few of the drivers of the support vehicles are mechanics and will be on hand to fix/recover your bike should it break down during a section of the rally.

Your own van/support driver can either follow the convoy of bikes or go on ahead to set up camp for the evening.

The provisional itinerary, so far, is as follows:

Day 1 (Fri 6th April 2012): Meet at John O' Groats Campsite (http://www.johnogroatscampsite.co.uk/ ) and prepare our bikes/support vehicles, etc. and get to know each other.

Day 2 (Sat 7th April 2012): Leave John O’Groats and ride through the beautiful Scottish countryside to Inverness (http://www.auchnahillin.co.uk ) where we will campover.

Day 3 (Sun 8th April 2012): Leave Inverness and ride to Glasgow where we will take part in the bike run round Glasgow in support of the Yorkhill Children’s Hospital. We will spend that night in John Johnstone's garden.

Brian Burrows and his NAS Events team are trying to organise a small VW Event in Cornwall to coincide with the finish (Friday 13th - Sunday 15th.) This will allow ALL VW enthusiasts to attend, show their support and have a great weekend into the bargain. All proceeds will go to Brad's Cancer Foundation. Please watch this space.

Day 10 (Sun 15th April 2012): Get yourselves home for a well deserved night in your own bed! Again, we are currently negotiating to get bikes dropped back to different parts of the UK via a transport company.

If you would like to join in, have any ideas on how to support us, have a bike or spares you would like to donate or would just like to sponsor us with a donation, please contact us. Event sponsors are also welcome and we are in negotiations with a couple of TV networks who are keen to cover the event.

As this event will be taking place on public roads, for safety reasons, it may be necessary to break the convoy up into smaller groups of 10-20 bikes at a time (staggering start times.) Don’t worry though, each group will have experienced riders in it and of course support drivers. Nobody will get left behind!

Please keep checking back for updates on this once in a lifetime event.
