We support seriously injured rugby players to make a difference in their lives

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page. Rugby has always played a large part in my life and more recently with Eleanor as well. Over recent years we have followed the annual England v Ireland Legends Charity games, played on the eve of the main Six Nations Event. A fantastic occasion with many household names enjoying a very competitive game & of course a few drinks afterwards. The Legends Charity has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds/euros for their given charities, which recently included, The Doddie Weir Foundation.

With our Irish/English union and to help celebrate our wedding, we thought it would be a fantastic opportunity to ask guests to donate to these two fantastic rugby charities, both who support catastrophically injured rugby players in their respective countries.

About the charity

The IRFU Charitable Trust supports seriously injured rugby players who have suffered catastrophic injury including severe spinal injury leaving them paralysed and in need of round the clock care, serious head injuries or other life changing injuries. The Trust maintains regular contact with each injured player and their families. We help with locomotory expenses, specialised equipment (such as lifting equipment, beds, or wheelchairs), home alterations, medical expenses, nursing and caring costs, motor vehicles etc. This is not an exhaustive list but it gives an indication of the kind of help provided by the Trust. Over the past few years the average payment for assistance has amounted to about €300,000 per annum. There are 36 players in Ireland supported by the Trust in this way. To fund this assistance the Trust relies upon regular substantial grants from the IRFU itself, together with generous donations and gifts. Thank you for your support, we really appreciate it.
