I've been really lucky so far in that I've never personally suffered form mental health issues. However it has become evident to me that as we all get older, it's likely that we either know someone affected by mental health, or that we will one day suffer ourselves or our loved ones will.

Whether it be through ageing parents, relatives or friends eventually mental health issues seem to affect us all and so little is really understood about the causes and potential remedies.

I just want to do my bit to help research and care in this area. So... after my Three Peaks Challenge last year I decided to up the ante, quite a lot really. 

In September of this year I am therefore embarking upon a 969 mile cycle ride from Land's End to John O'Groats - the length of the country. It requires approx. 106 miles and 6,000 feet of climbing every day for 9 consecutive days. I've been cycling for just a year and have done a couple of 100 mile days to-date but this is something else and will require significant training. I wanted to do something that people would recognise as a real effort on my behalf for the charity and consequently would support me accordingly. Training has started, its cold out there in January and February, and I'm confident of being able to make it but I will have to get used to being on that bike which means I'll be on it every day up until I start the ride.
