Story

We are fundraising for the  Joy For Humanity Health Centre in Kyazanga, Lwengo District in Uganda which will partially open (50%) in October or November 2021

Why do they need a health centre?

At the moment, one in eight children in Lwengo District will not celebrate their fifth birthday. Imagine if that was the case in the UK – three children out of every nursery class wouldn't reach reception.  That is unthinkable.

The maternal mortality rate for Uganda as a whole is around 336/100,000, (UK 7/100,000), and Lwengo District has a rate of around 500/100,000. The issue seems to be around village 'traditional birthing attendants' with no training.  We will be offering Community Health Services to start with but as soon as we have the funds we will be opening a maternity suite with labour ward.  This will be one of our top priorities.

Other common serious illnesses include malnutrition, Malaria, and HIV.

Six medical doctors serve a population of 270,000 people. In Hackney, UK, 150+ doctors serve a similar number.

The Uganda government health budget for Lwengo is £800,000, which is £3 per person. Just one GP practice in Hackney that serves 7,000 people has a budget of £1,000,000, which is £143 per person.

There's less than the equivalent of one dentist for the whole District, private or government.

The life expectancy at birth for men in Lwengo is 53.2 years, and for women, it is 63.9 years.

Although we will be charging for our services the cost of an outpatients appointment will be less than a pound and we are launching a savings scheme now for community members to save to make sure they have that £1.

Current Status

Currently, we are in the process of building and equipping the Health Centre so that we start 50% of the operations in October 2021.  Check out the remarkable progress here https://youtu.be/sfphypKdDp4
