What? John's running a half marathon? Can't be.
I'm not a runner. I don't like exercise. I'm out of shape. I like eating what I want, when I want. I like a good party. So why in the name of all that is good and holy am I running this ridiculous half marathon?
Well, one afternoon after several tall cold ones, a very good friend of mine asked me if I'd run for her charity, SLOW. I knew how much this charity helped her over the years (and still does). I've also attended SLOW events in the past and know how much good they do for so many families suffering after the loss of their children.
But selfishly, I'm also doing this for me. I've made some life changes (albeit only over the past couple of months) and they have been huge. I'm running 3 to 4 times a week and I've started commuting to work by bike. The change in commute is not because I believe in "Climate Change" but because it was time for me to start looking after myself.
And do I feel better about myself? I miss the parties (and I have had to say no to these so many times over the past couple of months) but I do feel like I've made a change for the better. And deep down, I keep pushing myself because I am running to raise money to help families get through the toughest times imaginable.
