Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland launch fundraising campaign to support survivors of sexual violence.

To coincide with International Women’s Day 2014 ‘Inspiring Change’, Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland is looking to the general public to donate their change, in the form of a £1 coin.

Launching their ‘Just £1’ campaign in March, Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland is  hoping people can donate small change to make a huge difference.

Sue Pearce, CEO of Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland, said “Here at Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland we do two things: actively campaign to end sexual violence against women and girls whilst also providing support to those who, sadly, have been through it.”

“One in four women will experience sexual violence at some point in their lives. Think about that statistic for a moment, that means all of us almost certainly know someone – a friend, a colleague, a family member – who has experienced sexual violence. Our Just £1 campaign asks people to come together as a community and help us support those women.”

The campaign is the first time in its 36 year history that the charity has appealed to the public for support in this way, Pearce remarked “as many of my colleagues in the charity sector will be all too aware, securing funding gets increasingly harder. In order to be able to keep offering the support we do for women here, we need to ask for help from the people here.”

The Just £1 campaign has been supported by a number of businesses across the region, including a newly launched Heaton-based design studio, Everything is my Design (who developed the visuals for the charity), CEO Mark Dawson said “I was in the dark on sexual violence statistics as much as anyone and the incredible work that Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland does for women of the area. We’re just delighted that we’ve been able to support the fundraising effort in some way.”

A donation of Just £1 will contribute to the provision of one-to-one counselling, sustain the vital work done by the Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland telephone helpline and the charity’s overall support for survivors of sexual violence.
