Story

Thanks for supporting my fundraising. Macmillan Cancer Support is here to help everyone with cancer live life as fully as they can, providing physical, financial and emotional support.

Cancer is something that affects the lives of everyone, we all know someone who has either suffered from or lost their fight against this evil disease and the journey is never an easy one.  The work that Macmillan do to help cancer patients and their loved ones is amazing, but what they do is dependant on fundraising, so I want to do my bit by completing a challenge that a year or so ago, no one who knew me would have ever believed I could manage.

In October 2019, my sister Yvette was given a terminal cancer diagnosis.  Yvette was the single most selfless person you could ever meet, as mad as a box of frogs, but kind and caring to a fault.  On January 11th 2020 she lost her fight, but she opened my eyes and gave me the motivation to make a difference to my own life, to improve my health and grab life by the balls (am I allowed to say that on here?)

If you don’t know me (thank you for even looking at this!), I used to be morbidly obese, I had a BMI of 46, suffered from Asthma and had been diagnosed with Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation (a heart condition).  Losing my sister really helped me understand how precious life is and made me realise what a fool I had been to live my life the way I had been, so I promised her that I was going to turn my life around and get my health back on track.  Yvette became my guiding light and motivation to keep pushing and she’s been really rather good at it.

Just over 16 months since her passing, I have lost over 9st in weight and completely changed my life, at 47 years of age, I’m the fittest I’ve ever been and have even stopped the medication I have been taking for my heart condition under the direction of my cardiologist.  I still have a little way to go, but I’m not stopping yet, so on Saturday, September 4th 2021, I’m taking part in the Macmillan Mighty Hike along the Jurassic coast - something that without the motivation and commitment that my sister gave to me, I would never have been able to achieve.

I know that times are difficult for everyone right now, but anything you can pledge will help the cause.
