I set myself the challenge of walking the West Highland Way in seven days after my new work buddy told me about Edith Molyneux. Spider-Ede is superhero loving three year old from the Wirral. She has been diagnosed with a brain tumour called Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). Due to the tumour being located in the centre of the brain, it is not possible to surgically remove it. In the UK chemotherapy is also not an option because the levels needed to treat this tumour would poison the rest of her body. But this story is about hope.
Spider-Ede is currently receiving treatment at The Instituto de Oncología Intervencionista or “IDOI” in Monterrey, Mexico. They are leaders in intra-arterial treatment for brain tumours and are recognized as specialists for DIPG treatment. The superheroes working here are making a massive difference to a number of families as they are giving children
a chance.
The current goal for the Spider-Ede Appeal is to raise approximately £700,000. This will help cover the cost of flights and the treatment that Edie requires. But the Molyneux family is also trying to be superheroes for other by raising awareness of DIPG and hoping to help other children and families in the future.
More information about the appeal, events, merchandise and the updates through the Hero diaries can be found at https://spider-ede-appeal.org.uk/
On Wednesday 23rd May 2018 I will set off from Milngavie with blister plasters and other equipment needed to survive this adventure. As long as things go to plan I will be putting my feet up on the evening of Tuesday 29th May 2018 after trudging 96 miles through some of the most spectacular scenery in all of Britain. It would also be fabulous if my own superheroes could support me and enable me to celebrate reaching my fundraising target at the same time.
