The loss of a baby whether it's before, during or after birth is the most traumatic and devastating thing a parent can ever go through. For most parent’s, there is a general thought of “this will never happen to me”. But, it did happen to me and my family. That is why I have agreed to throw myself out of a plane (albeit attached to someone who hopefully knows what they are doing) on Saturday 23rd May, to raise a lot of money for SANDS Lothians, the Stillborn and Neonatal Death Society Charity which is based in Edinburgh.
When a much loved and wanted baby dies, the parents feel very isolated and alone and often do not know what to do or where to turn. Mums and Dads are suddenly faced with decisions they never expected to have to make, as well as deal with the shock and grief of their loss.
If it wasn’t for the support SANDS Lothians gave to my family and me after the death 5 years ago of Daniel and Harry – the family that we had longed for so much – I don’t know how we would have coped and worked through the loss.
Author, Tessa Wilkinson, sums it up perfectly when she said, “When an adult dies, it feels like the end of our past. But when a child dies it feels like the end of our future”.
In gratitude, I would like to give something back to SANDS Lothians so that other people can benefit from their help at that most desperate time. The organisation is a charity (Registered Scottish Charity No: SCO24375) relying on donations from the public. SANDS offer support, understanding & help to parents bereaved through miscarriage, early birth and neo-natal loss. Thankfully the majority of people never require their help, but as a result, their work perhaps is not as well-known as many other charities. Please support SANDS Lothian by donating through this JustGiving page that I have set up in memory of Daniel and Harry. As many of you will know already, your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to SANDS Lothian and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer.
Thank you for all your continuing love and support.
