We aim to inspire young people to use sport to come through adversity

Story

Lily Comm's  started supporting the 'Adversity Awards' after being invited to the Inaugural awards ceremony in 2015 where we saw over 50 young people, standing on a stage being recognised for their individual achievements in overcoming Adversity through getting involved in Sport.

Each story is an individual inspiration and amongst them some would even say there are miracles, each young person rewarded has clearly demonstrated the determination and strength in overcoming their own 'Adversity' through sport, there are some truly amazing stories behind the awards and some amazingly Inspirational people involved.

The Adversity Awards aspires to take the event UK wide and now, in its 3rd Year it has the full support of North Yorkshire Sport but needs a much funding as we can possibly raise to continue this amazing way of building young peoples confidence and recognising them in a way that is truly Inspirational.

About Adversity Awards

How we started

Having struggled at school and losing his eye to cancer at 33, Jonathan Walker – the owner of

Gambaru Fitness

– knows about beating adversity. That’s why he chose ‘Gambaru’ a Japanese word that means

‘never give in

’ – ‘to be the best you can be’

as the name for his business. So when Mike Pywell, his advisor suggested they launch the Gambaru Adversity Awards, he didn’t blink. In fact he nodded and smiled, probably knowing full well like most things we do this would grow to become bigger than planned.

The Objective

Our objective was to reach into the community to find young people who have ‘kept going’ when it was easier ‘to give up’. Faced with adversity – social, physical or learning difficulties – each of our winners have used sport to overcome what life has thrown at them. Their journeys are unique, and they’ve all found the grit and determination you only discover when you move from ‘victim to survivor’. We salute each one of them and this programme is a tribute to their fortitude.

The event LILY COMM's are doing the The 2017 Coast to Coast 'Rat-Race' a 2 day event covering 105 miles of the UKs most inhospitable (but amazingly beautiful) routes across the highlands of Scotland and we will be Running/Treking/ Cycling (on&off road) and Kayaking across both Lochness and Loch Leven to reach the finish line.

Coast to Coast is a really tough event and not for the feint hearted, We will be taking on a mountainous journey that is heavily impacted by weather conditions. We’ll be running, kayaking and more importantly riding into the prevailing wind, so the chances are we’ll find the riding sections tougher than any usual ride out. That being said, we hope when the sun shines we will see the most fantastic views imaginable!

About the charity
