Story

The friends of Lily Burton are mounting an appeal to commemorate her tireless dedication and community service.  The main body of the funds will be used to install a memorial window in the Medieval Church of St Mary Magdalene in Trimdon Village, the church where Lily worshipped for over 50 years and served as organist, flower arranger and member of the Parochial Church Council until her untimely death in the autumn of 2011.

Lily was a marvellous person, kind, and self-effacing. She never had a bad word to say about anyone, always seeing the positive side of everyone she met and her faith was central to her whole life. Not only was Lily a member of the church council she played an important role in numerous local charities, bodies and organisations: not least in local politics as a Parish Councillor working to improve the community for all.

In order to provide a lasting legacy, and as a tribute to Lily, John Burton M.B.E. (Lily’s husband) has agreed that the Church Council can mount this special fundraising appeal.  An appeal supported by Tony and Cherie Blair who have kindly pledged to double the total amount raised. Endorsing the appeal, Tony added “Lily was a very special person and a dear friend and Cherie and I are delighted to support the appeal”.

A memorial window by the renowned stained glass artist Bridget Jones will form the centrepiece of the appeal. At the same time, it is hoped to commission and dedicate a memorial plaque to commemorate the famous ‘People’s Princess’ speech made in 1997 outside the Church gate. Any remaining funds will support the upkeep and preservation of the church which was not only a central part of Lily’s life, but remains that of countless other villagers.

Early indications suggest that the work will cost around £12,000. It is hoped that the window and plaque can be commissioned and completed for Lily’s 2 anniversary on the 16 November 2013 .

Any gift, large or small, would be greatly appreciated towards this fitting tribute tp a lovely lady.
