There are things which we, day to day, take for granted- the ability to see our friends, doing things independently and socially, work with others with ease and without thought, and laugh and smile at the smallest of things. For others, these things can be the hardest tasks they face and because of their personal situation are left isolated and alone, without happiness in their lives and without experiencing the things we have easy access too.
Square Pegs is an amazing charity, lead by incredibly devoted people who provide opportunities for vulnerable, socially isolated people with learning disabilities and autism allowing them to be involved in high quality Arts based groups, projects and performances. This enables them to be engaged in purposeful activity where they can build friendships and feel a real sense of belonging. They use drama, music and creative based methods to build confidence and self-esteem, develop social communication skills and other transferable skills so that everyone can achieve and maintain positive wellbeing and be their best self.
When I was younger I watched some of the performances that this little charity would hold at the Hazlitt theatre in Maidstone, to watch my foster cousin Jonny. He would stand on stage with such pride and perform his favourite song in sign language with great enthusiatiam and joy. I loved seeing him so happy. Now I have the opportunity to help raise money to keep the provision for these young people, by Square Pegs, going. Please, please help me reach my total (fingers crossed I make it on the day) and let’s see everyone having the opportunity to do the things they love, making life long friends and memories along the way!
