Story
Many people now know George's story, after he was born last year at 27 weeks, weighing just 1lb 3oz. After a very difficult birth, followed by 15 weeks spent in 2 different hospitals, Tiny Lives helped us a great deal during the 13 weeks we spent in the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle.
I have attached photos of Tiny Lives' official leaflet, which highlight some of the many wonderful things that they do. However, for us it was the small things that made a big impact. I can still remember the first time I held George - he was 7 days old, still only weighed 1lb 3oz, and was attached to the ventilator. He had a tube in his mouth, that went down his throat into his lungs, which was the piece of equipment keeping him alive. I was frightened to move in case I dislodged this tube and took away his oxygen. The chair I was sat on was the type of chair you'd expect to find in a doctor's waiting room; plastic, hard and extremely uncomfortable! After about 5 minutes of holding George, during what was the most amazing experience, my back was in absolute agony due to sitting in the same position, not daring to move an inch, for so long. We could only hold him for about 20 minutes a day at first due to the fact he was so poorly, however after that time we'd spend the next few hours with a sore back. After about 6 weeks on the unit, Tiny Lives purchased some reclining (infection prevention friendly!) arm chairs. The difference these chairs made to holding George cannot be described. Attached is a picture of Paul sitting in one of these chairs - you can see how comfy they looked!
The leaflet in the photo describes how Tiny Lives fund a physio for the unit, which was beneficial to George. Lots of premature babies spend their first weeks lying on their front, as it makes it much easier for them to breathe, and digest their food (lying on their front isn't as issue in hospital as they are attached to a monitor). After about 8 weeks we noticed that one of George's hips had started to turn out to the side due to the way he was constantly lying. We were extremely worried that if this issue was not resolved it could cause him issues later on in life. The physio carried out an assessment, and provided an aid for George to lie on which tucked his knees in, and aligned his hips. After only a short period of time his hip straightened out into a regular position.
Please help us to support this amazing charity, so they can continue supporting families with premature babies.
