Approximately 15,000 people die from liver disease in England and Wales every year. Liver disease is now the third leading cause of premature death in the UK, and numbers are continuing to rise by around 5 percent each year. Almost all of these deaths could be avoided through earlier diagnosis and treatment or lifestyle change.
The onset of liver failure from these diseases can be sudden and dramatic. The staff at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), Birmingham in association with the rare liver disease research group at the University of Birmingham do a sterling job in treating these diseases and progressing the understanding of the care needed to fight these.
In the summer of 2018 my family faced this head-on as my Mum spent 3 months fighting a still undiagnosed disease at QEH, eventually receiving a liver transplant. The support provided from all of the teams at the hospital was incredible and helped us all through. As such I've decided to raise money in support of rare liver disease research to maintain the good work that the hospital does.
